Brief: New book explores the creations of Brequet
BY LESLIE JORDAN CLARY
Abraham-Louis Breguet is known as “The Father of Modern Horology” and now a new book, Breguet: Art and Innovation in Watch Making, by Emmanuel Breguet and Martin Chapman, takes an in-depth look at the renowned horologist. Some of Breguet’s visionary creations include the first wristwatch, the self-winding watch, the gong spring and the first travel clock, which was sold to Napoleon Bonaparte. His most famous piece, the Marie-Antoinette pocket watch, was fashioned over a 40-year period. The hardcover coffee table book features more than 70 timepieces that originated with the Breguet company and includes a number of essays that shed light on both the personal and professional background of Breguet.
